The great advantage of learning how to read music is it is a world wide universal language that is recognised by musicians across the globe. Start by learning all the major and minor scales but once you understand the C major scale you're ready to try them all. Practice the scales slowly, get familiar with all the root notes. Learn the names and positions of the notes all over the guitar neck. Then make sure you practice each scale across the neck so you really know every part , position and box of that scale.
